CURRIER & ASSOCIATES Designs New Assisted Living Project
Newburyport, Mass.—March 25, 2008—CURRIER & Associates, Inc., a full-service interior design firm specializing in creating enriching environments for living, healing and working, today announced the start of a new assisted living project.
CURRIER is designing the interiors for “Methuen Village at Riverwalk Park,” a 64,000 square-foot, four-story, affordable assisted living facility. Methuen Village will offer 19 units for residents having no more than 50 percent of area median income and four units for those having no more than 80 percent of area median income.
Units will range in size from 400 to 520 square feet in a mix that includes 61 expanded studios, 24 one-bedroom units and six two-bedroom units. At full occupancy, the project will house 97 residents.
The plans include a separate, dedicated 14-unit specialty-care wing with a focus on accepting residents with memory impairment and dementia. Recognized as design experts for healthcare facilities and senior living residences, CURRIER has an in-depth understanding of the needs of those with Alzheimer’s disease. For example, in designing environments for those who have dementia, it is important to use photographs with clear images and have certain types of patterns in the carpeting that do not create visual problems for the residents.
Methuen Village is being developed by owner David P. Spada, DS Development, LLC and will be operated by Senior Living Residences (SLR), a Massachusetts-based senior facility management company. Spada has collaborated extensively with both SLR and CURRIER to develop a facility that fosters social interaction and promotes the health and well-being of the residents.
Specifically, for Methuen Village CURRIER is creating a traditional, comfortable design that incorporates warm tones. Common areas have been designed to create multiple-use spaces and a variety of settings. Multi-function rooms, for example, are designed to be adaptable to people of differing physical needs as well as of varying cultural, economic and social backgrounds.
Additionally, CURRIER is helping Methuen Village create a socially inviting room for The Brain Gym™, which uses computers and leading-edge software to provide stimulating and fun mental exercises to help residents keep their minds active and engaged.
“Sharon Currier and her entire staff have dedicated themselves to the success of this exciting project,” said Owner Spada. “They offer a wealth of experience, professionalism, vision for excellence and an in-depth understanding of the need to balance form, function and aesthetics while bringing to life my vision for each and every detail of the undertaking.”
The new assisted living facility is located at the end of a cul-de–sac at 4 Gleason Street, abutting a scenic pond and small stream. The property will be connected to an adjacent city park via an extension of an existing city riverwalk project. The site is also located in the heart of Methuen’s historic downtown district, which dates back to the 1700’s. The project is a key component of the city’s plans for redevelopment of the central business district.
Construction commenced in December 2007 and is scheduled to be completed by mid-January 2009. Phase two, a 20,500 square-foot two-story retail and medical office building, will be built adjacent to the assisted living facility, and along the front of the main boulevard in downtown Methuen and will be delivered for occupancy by July of 2009.
“We are thrilled to support David Spada’s passion in bringing affordable assisted living to Methuen,” said Sharon Currier, president of CURRIER. “He has worked diligently to plan the type of ambiance that helps seniors thrive. And we are passionate about adding warmth, comfort and beauty to their surroundings, along with addressing technical issues to enhance the quality of life.”
